Biography
Riddhi Patel is a south-asian visual artist based in Alberta and has received an MFA from the University of Alberta (2023). She maintains a diverse studio practice that includes drawing, performance, and sound works. Her work is deeply rooted in the subtle intricacies found within grids. Drawing inspiration from her daily observations, architectural influences, and her background as a Kathak dancer, she weaves a rich tapestry of analogies within her work.
The grid serves as a foundational element within her work. Reflecting on its presence as a ubiquitous repetitive feature within every surrounding, it occupies every space and terrain, leaving no room for escape. In a sense, grids have shaped the constructed ecosystem. Considering the grid as the epitome of the constructed landscape, she explores its sensibilities and aesthetic perspectives by drawing various analogies.
As an early-career artist, Riddhi held her first solo exhibition, Implicit Grids, at FAB Gallery, University of Alberta, in 2023. She has also showcased her work in group exhibitions at galleries across Canada and India, including The SAAG (Lethbridge), Nina Haggerty Art Gallery (Edmonton), Grimsby Public Art Gallery (Ontario), Bleeding Heart Art Space (Edmonton), Co*Lab Yeg (Edmonton), Space 118 (Mumbai), and Art Buzz (New Delhi). Riddhi has received grants such as the Edmonton Arts Council, the Melba Sadler Award of Art and Design and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Graduate Student Scholarship.
